About Ashia Circle

What is Ashia Circle?

Ashia Circle is a group mentoring organization for girls ages 10-14 of African descent, which includes African American and African girls. We became a fully incorporated non-profit organization in October 2007 and received tax-exempt status (501 c3) in April 2008. Ashia Circle board members collaborate with community volunteers to implement educational enrichment events that have a mind, body, or spirit focus.

We see our services as preventive interventions applied in a familiar environment with other girls who share similar gender, racial and developmental backgrounds.

Our mission is to build pride, resilience and determination in girls of African descent through the connection of mind, body, and spirit.

Our goals are:

1. To foster cultural pride and identity.
2. To mentor, educate, inspire and empower girls, to utilize their own unique voices.
3. To help build the connection between the girls, their families, and their communities.
4. To incorporate service learning into school and family life.

Our objectives are:

1. To hold seminars/workshops with girls on topics that supports our mission.
2. To have a bi-annual conference.
3. To retain a core group of adult and peer volunteers.

The Ashia Circle Logo

ashia circle logo
The logo consists of the word “Ashia” and the “Duafe” symbol. Ashia is a West African word defined as meaningful existence and the Duafe is an Adlnkra symbol of a wooden comb that symbolizes beauty, hygiene, and feminine qualities. The logo beautifully represents our motto of providing meaningful opportunities for life-long change in African descended pre-teen girls.
